How does a giant satellite dish and receiver work? What are they called?

I just bought a house. In the background is a giant (probably 12 feet in diameter) satellite dish. It has an electric motor to rotate, and a bunch of wires that go to the house. The previous owners left the digital receiver box, but I know nothing of them, and have had little luck online. How they work? What do I do with them? Where can I more information?
